I watched The Man with the Movie Camera again a couple days ago. It was a funny situation, my roommate and I were at our friend's house for his birthday and it was like 2 AM or thereabouts and (we'd smoked a joint and) the dude whose birthday it was said we should listen to this weird trip-hop music which was synched up to a weird old silent movie. It was The Man with the Movie Camera with the Cinematic Orchestra soundtrack. I thought it was so funny that they (both of the fellas I was watching with) thought the music was the important thing and the movie was secondary--when, afterwards, I explained stuff like the Kuleshov effect and speculated as to the influence of The Cameraman's Revenge, they were both completely mystified. Good times.

Hello my old friend! I see you have compiled an updated list with some really beautiful screenshots! I rate it it even better this time. Excellent work!

I have to say that I'm a bit jealous of you having seen films like Ozu's "An Inn in Tokyo" and the Shimizu one... I haven't seen them yet as you might have guessed. The only silent Ozu I have seen is I Was Born, But.. which is awesome of course (seen it three times already). Wife, Be Like a Rose! is another early Jap film I want to see. It's a Naruse film I believe, isn't it?

Hmmm, well I'm gonna make a notice that I should see those as a growing Japanese film lover.

Btw, I'm doing very well these days Mango. I'm still an idle romantic dreamer but there's a progress. Yes there I am!

Hi Z. Great to hear from you! You commented just as I came to trim my list down (but will build back up eventually).

If you like I Was Born, But... (I remember it being on your list?) you will definitely like An Inn in Tokyo. Might be hard to find, though. You should be able to find Shimizu, though (R2 DVD, I think); and Shimizu is a director I imagine you would like a lot. Wife, Be Like a Rose! is Naruse, but somewhat atypical (the heroine doesn't pity herself!); I would also recommend it to you. What 30s Japanese films have you seen? This seems like a period you would enjoy a bunch (I enjoy it a lot!).

A question for you as a growing Japanese film lover: what are you on anime? I know you love animation, but I don't think I've ever heard you mention anime. Having avoided it for so long, I approached it recently and found a few that really surprised me. Curious about your opinion.

Have you made it to Canada yet? Have a portfolio of art I can look through yet? If not, keep trying. And keep dreaming.

Thanks for stopping by.

Ha, good call and timing!

I'm already acqainted with Mr. Shimizu. I've seen 5 of his 1930's films thus far and Arigato- San (my favorite of those) being a huge delight and refreshing viewing. Amazing little movie. Others that I have seen are some of the early Mizoguchi films, one Yamanaka (Humanity and Paper Balloon which I thought was superb!), Page of Madness and two Ozu silents (IWBB, and Story of Floating Weeds). You're free to give recommendations as you want. I know I have more to discover from this period of Japanese cinema.

I like anime. Not a huge fan but the charm and original approach to animation has always fascinated me. I've been mostly following the Ghibli studio films. My favorite is Castle in the Sky.

I imagine you liking some anime films but I can't recommend many since I'm niether expert no an avid fan. I think you would enjoy a film like Whisper of the Heart or My Neighbour Totoro. Seems like the two Ghibli film you'll enjoy the most in my opinion.

*browsing your blog*

I have to say that 5cm per Second is one of those anime films that have interested me for a long time now but due to availbility I didn't watch it yet. I was actually initially interested in "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" made by the same director. Have you seen it already? Which one shall I like more you think? Regardless, I'm pleased to hear you're getting into animation. I, myself have been covering many of the 1930's and 1940's short cartoons recently. They're so great! Fleischer Studios is quite underrated compared to Disney and Warner Bros... I assume you have seen those already, hu? ;)

My portfolio is not that impressive yet. I'm still taking darwing lessons. I have to learn a three year long to attain technique in just a number of months. I'm getting the hang of it though. I will send you some flattering works eventually.

All the best, and watch more animation! :)
